Lexington Comic Con 2018 - Friday!

Todd is always searching the internet for new cons and rare celebrities to meet. He found Lexington Comic Con and once they announced that Chuck Norris was going to be a guest, we knew we had to go.

So on Friday, we got up at an extremely early hour so we could be on the road by 5 am. The trip took about 5 hours and we went right to the convention. They were doing badge pick-up early and then the convention opened up at 1 pm for the people who had bought three day passes.

It took about two minutes to get our badges and then we got our free bag and free t-shirt that came with being a three day badge holder. From there, we went to our hotel. Sadly, our room wasn't ready so we went to find food.

There was a Cheesecake Factory not far away so we went there. Emily was very excited! We got there as they were opening so we got seated right away. We had lunch plus some cheesecake, then headed back to the hotel. Thankfully our room was ready so we hauled our stuff in and I got changed into my Princess Leia costume. Then it was off to the con.

We got a little lost trying to find the entrance to the autographs but once we found it, we started to look around for who was there. We got Ludi Lin's autograph first - he was the Black Ranger in the new Power Rangers movie.

From there, we got a picture and autograph from Ingvild Deila (Princess Leia from Rogue One), a picture with Doug Jones, a picture with Judith Hoag (who was April in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the mom in the Halloweentown movies).

The highlight for Emily was meeting Tara Strong who is the voice of Twilight Sparkle (among many others). She even did the voice of Twilight for Emily who was a bit star struck.

We did do some shopping too. Emily spent all of her money right away but she did get some good deals. She got some Monster High and Equestria Girls dolls as well as a bunch of Beanie Boos. She also had to get a horse stuffed animal since we were in horse country.

We left the convention around 4:30 and got Cookout for dinner. After we ate, Emily asked to go swimming. Todd was dead tired at this point so he didn't swim but I did with Emily for a bit. We passed out quite early since we wanted to get to the convention before it opened in the morning.

Herself the Elf

Over the last few years, several childhood favorites have been rebooted. With the huge success of My Little Pony, it's not a big surprise that other classic cartoons are getting new shows. Just today, it was announced that Rainbow Brite is getting a reboot.

I liked Rainbow Brite and My Little Pony, but I would be very surprised if my favorite 80's show got a new century reboot. That show was Herself the Elf.

I'm not sure why I loved Herself the Elf so much, but it was a great show. It was a little dark, though the characters were cute. It felt a little like the Rankin/Bass Lord of the Rings cartoons. Plus it was very much a fantasy which has been my preferred genre since I was small

Too bad Herself the Elf faded into obscurity, so I don't see it coming back. There are a handful of YouTube videos out there so I can relive my childhood if I want.

Halloween 2013

Yesterday was my favorite Holiday of the year. We did a lot this year leading up to Halloween from trick or treating with our church to attending a couple of Halloween festivals. On Halloween, things were a little more laid back.

Last year, Emily threw up once the night before Halloween. She seemed fine but we decided caution was the best way to go so we kept her out of school. This year, luckily we didn’t have a repeat and she was able to go to school in costume.

We left for the mall to go trick or treating early so we could run some errands. We got to the mall earlier so Emily could spend the last of her birthday money. She got the Spike she wanted from Build A Bear Workshop. We had a little bit more time to kill so we went into Barnes and Noble to look at books.

Finally the appointed hour arrived and we made our way through the mall. Emily had picked one of the buckets she had gotten from McDonald’s last year and soon it was overflowing with candy. She also got to meet the Chick-Fil-A cow who was dressed as a fairy and get other things like stickers and pencils.

We were all pooped by the time we were done, so we got take out and headed home. Emily picked the Toy Story of Terror cartoon to watch before bed. I haven’t been sleeping well, so Todd and I watched some of the Roseanne Halloween specials instead of something scary.

It was a nice end to the Halloween season. Though I’m not going to take my Halloween decorations down until it’s time for the Christmas ones to go up since I just got them up last week!

Why I'm Not a Brony

I’m going to start out this post by saying I don’t think there is anything wrong with being a brony. I think if I was younger and/or didn't have a young child, I would be a brony. But there is a reason why I'm  not.

When I was a kid, I loved My Little Pony. Not so much the TV show but the actual toys. My favorite was a pink Pegasus pony that I played with all the time. When the new show came out, Emily was a toddler. She was really into shows like Dora that were not fun at all for me to watch. So we caught My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic when we could because it’s a much better show than Dora.

She didn't like it as much when it first came on, because I think she was a little young for it. But now that she’s nearly five years old, it’s one of her favorite shows. We go through periods where we watch a lot of ponies. She just got the new Equestria Girls movie a few days ago and we've already watched it several times.

Because I watch My Little Pony with Emily, I have no desire to watch it when she’s not around. I think this is the main reason I’m not a brony. While I don’t mind watch ponies, after watching the Too Many Pinkie Pies episode again and again, I’m a little turned off by it.

I can understand why other people are bronies though – it’s a very good show. There is just too much of a good thing sometimes, especially when you are the parent of a preschooler.
